Halyard’s innovative PureGen compact soot cleaner for superyacht installations on show at METS
PureGen, an innovative compact soot cleaner for marine generators, has already been specified and fitted onto over 25 generators in the superyacht sector. It has been developed and manufactured by Halyard Marine and last year received a Special Mention at the DAME awards. Halyard will be showing Puregen at their new stand located in Hall 11 Stand 710 at the Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS).

Generators are known for producing sooty emissions that both leave deposits on deck, and an unsightly sheen on the water surrounding an anchored superyacht. The effect is so pronounced that underwater lights are avoided, and the crew will typically start the day by cleaning the waterline, and moving the yacht to clean waters.
PureGen completely solves this problem by using a catalytically coated filter to capture soot particles, and a gas pre-heater to ensure conditions are right for the catalyst to oxidise the soot. The result is clean exhaust gas, and no soot in the cooling water flowing from the gas – water separator.
It is a compact unit intended for generators from 40kw – 500kw and fits into the marine exhaust system immediately downstream of the generator. It is smaller and lighter than any competing product, measuring just 1.25m long by 300mm in diameter and weighing less than 50kg for a typical 100kw system.

The Puregen system is incredibly simple to use and maintain. The ceramic filter is continually cleaned by the oxidisation process ensuring that its efficiency remains at a constant level. Periodic turning to allow ash to be blown out and occasional regeneration at very high temperatures are all that is required. The electric pre-heater has the advantage that it can be run either for ten minutes in any hour, or used continuously to provide a low level loadbank for the generator. The heater will automatically cut out when the generator full load is required.
Raasta, a 50m Heeson yacht, has recently had a major exhaust refit at Monaco Marine and has been fitted with three PureGen systems on its generators. Andrew Hinshaw, the yacht’s engineer reported; “Having been berthed in Capri, the water is flat calm, clear and the underwater lights have been on throughout the evenings. As far as I can see, there is not a spot or smear around the exhaust. Previously there would have been a slick and we would have turned off the underwater lights. At this moment, I am impressed.”
