Halyard silences Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management
Halyard Marine Ltd, UK specialists in the reduction of noise and vibration on board boats, is playing a fundamental role in keeping the Dutch waterways quiet with the installation of its custom designed exhaust silencing systems on ten new patrol boats for the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management.
The Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management in the Netherlands, has commissioned Dutch boat building specialists, De Haas Maassluis to design and build the basis of a new fleet. The innovative patrol boats have been standardised to provide compact, fast and manoeuvrable vessels for use on the country’s inland waterways and coastlines. Each boat will play a fundamental role in maintaining a safe and robust environment on Dutch waters by the policing of traffic control, surveillance, emergency assistance and general inspection of the waterways.
Performance, efficiency and sustainability is paramount for the government and with crew expected to man the boats for sustained periods of time, a comfortable, high standard and calm working environment is crucial. Halyard, Europe’s largest designer and manufacturer of specialist marine exhaust systems, has been working closely with De Haas Maassluis in order to drastically reduce all sound and vibration from engine to transom - known to cause sea sickness and discomfort for those onboard.
Each boat has two 885hp (651kW) engines and has been fitted with two exhaust systems from Halyard. Halyard’s exhaust riser systems effectively eject cooling water and exhaust gases in addition to silencing an engine’s combustion noise. For the De Haas Maassluis patrol boats, stainless steel transition pieces have been fitted between twin turbo chargers connected to exhaust risers with 254mm water injection spray heads. These are then connected to Halyard’s GRP dual chamber silencers, capable of reducing noise by as much as 80%, the whole system is connected using a made to measure exhaust hose.
Halyard has also fitted a GRP single lift silencer and water separator to the boats’ generator. This reduces the noise created by water sploshing from the exhaust outlet by enabling dry gas to exit the transom through a stainless steel hull flapper, whilst the water is drained via a valve in the hull.
The Project Manager from De Haas Maassluis says, “ The exhaust systems from Halyard have proven to be the best fit to comply with our design philosophy. The clean and efficient design of the system enables us to deliver patrol vessels of the highest standard. The noise reduction and water cooled exhaust gasses ensure a safe and sustainable work environment for the crew on the Dutch waters.” Halyard is the only company in the world able to manufacture an entire exhaust solution from “turbo to transom” in-house. Service and support starts from the initial designs through to assistance during manufacture and installation, right through to final sea trials. Throughout any project the company’s integrated 3D CAD technology enables fast and accurate document and design exchange and delivery, anywhere in the world, to ensure the project is fully documented and recorded.
