Combining Art With Science
Over the past 25 years Halyard has perfected the art of reducing engine and generator generated noise and vibration on all manner of marine craft from small sailboats through military and commercial to the Worlds largest Superyachts. It is down to the passion of the Halyard team to design and manufacture products and solutions that we are proud to put our name to and use on our own boats that has driven us to develop the breadth of knowledge of in marine noise reduction specialising in the design and manufacture of complete exhaust systems, noise insulation materials and the specification and supply of anti-vibration shaft CV joints.

Leading the Marine Industry initiative “SoundBoat” gave Halyard a unique insight into what the key elements are which generate and magnify noise on boats. Soundboat provided two years of intensive research, in collaboration with engine manufacturers, boat builders, naval architects and the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at Southampton University. The principle findings of this study confirmed that the dominant mechanical noise on all twin engine power boats in the RCD driveby test was Exhaust born. The study allowed us to test and confirm many of our basic rules in noise control and ratify much of the previous experience that Halyard had developed over the past two decades with scientific measurement and analysis producing comprehensive statistical data to help us refine our design criteria. As a direct result Halyard are now able to design and development solutions to mechanical noise problems ensuring that whatever conceivable permutation of boat type, size and engine configuration you are trying to achieve we will know how best way to minimise the noise output from the engines and gensets.

A direct result of our commitment to R&D through the Soundboat project is our brand new patent protected range of “tuned” silencers, which represent a significant advance in marine exhaust silencing. Recent results of a RCD drive by test show that using this exhaust system Halyard has been able to reduce the exhaust noise levels to below the noise of the boat travelling through the water. Amazingly the “tuned” silencer can be optimised to minimise noise output from specific engine types in a smaller more compact system helping the builder to maximise space in an increasingly congested machinery space.
